A MALLORCAN LEGACY IN EVERY BOTTLE: BODEGA RIBAS

In the heart of Mallorca, just 20 minutes from Palma, lies Bodega Ribas—widely recognized as the island’s oldest winery and one of its most prestigious. With more than 300 years of continuous winemaking tradition, this historic estate offers a unique window into Mallorca’s viticultural heritage. Far more than a winery, Ribas is a living legacy where history, craftsmanship, and innovation meet in every glass.

Founded in 1711, Bodega Ribas has been owned and operated by the same family for over ten generations. Nestled in the small village of Consell, the estate is surrounded by ancient vines, almond trees, and the golden light that so defines Mallorca’s inland beauty. What sets Ribas apart is not only its longevity, but its unwavering dedication to quality, sustainability, and to preserving indigenous grape varieties—particularly Mantonegro and Prensal Blanc.

A HERITAGE WINERY ROOTED IN TIME

The Ribas estate spans over 100 hectares, with about 40 hectares dedicated to vineyards. Many of the vines are over 60 years old, with some exceeding a full century, offering a deep expression of the local terroir. The winemaking philosophy at Ribas blends traditional, low-intervention methods with modern precision—yielding wines that are elegant, balanced, and full of character.

Their flagship wine, Sió, is a tribute to the winery’s matriarch, Sió Ribas, who played a central role in preserving the estate during the challenges of the 20th century. A rich, structured red made primarily from Mantonegro and Syrah, Sió is both bold and refined, showing notes of ripe dark berries, spice, and Mediterranean herbs. It’s a wine that captures the soul of Mallorca—earthy, generous, and full of personality.

A VISIT TO REMEMBER

We had the opportunity to visit Bodega Ribas with our Swedish management team, and it quickly became one of the highlights of our time on the island. The experience began with a guided tour through the estate’s historic cellars, some dating back centuries, where the scent of oak barrels and fermenting grapes fills the air. Our guide walked us through the winemaking process with both passion and precision, sharing insights into Ribas’ commitment to sustainability and their work to rescue nearly forgotten native grape varieties.

The tasting itself was unforgettable—set in the elegant courtyard beneath swaying palms and dappled sunlight, we sampled a range of Ribas wines, from the crisp Ribas White and refreshing rosé, to the deeper, more complex Sió red. With each sip, the team grew more animated, the conversation more enthusiastic, and the laughter more frequent.

Needless to say, Johan took one for the team as the designated driver, while the rest of us—especially the girls—giggled our way home in the back seat, happily tipsy and full of new memories.

A TASTE OF TRADITION AT OCHO SUITES

At Ocho Suites, we proudly serve Ribas wines in our restaurant and bar, including the beloved Sió. Each bottle is more than just wine—it’s a story of legacy, land, and love. And if you fall in love with it like we did, you’re welcome to bring a bottle (or two) home with you.

Whether you’re a seasoned wine lover or simply curious to explore Mallorca’s most storied vineyard, a visit to Bodega Ribas offers a truly enriching and joyful experience. From centuries-old cellars to sun-soaked tastings, it’s a place where history and hospitality go hand in hand—and where every glass tells a story.
