ONE OF THE OLDEST AND MOST CHARMING VINEYARDS IN MALLORCA

Nestled in the scenic hills of Mallorca, Son Puig vineyard is a tribute to the island’s rich yet underappreciated winemaking tradition. While Mallorca is known for its stunning beaches and vibrant culture, its emerging reputation as a wine region is equally noteworthy. Son Puig stands out as a boutique winery that blends history, tradition, and modern innovation to produce exceptional wines.

Located near the charming village of Puigpunyent, just a short 20-minute drive from Palma, Son Puig is a historic finca with deep agricultural roots. The estate, dating back to at least 1597, grows not only grapevines but also olive trees, avocados, and a famous cherry orchard, reputed to produce the best cherries on the island. Remarkably, wine has been made here for centuries, and today, Son Puig continues that legacy with a renewed focus on quality and sustainability.

A VINEYARD STEEPED IN HISTORY

Son Puig’s name reflects its surroundings—"Son" referring to the estate, and "Puig" meaning "hill" in Catalan, highlighting its elevated position in the Tramuntana mountains. Though winemaking has long been part of this land, the vineyard was revitalized in the early 21st century to create wines that honor Mallorca’s terroir while establishing a modern identity for local wines. Spanning 22 hectares, the estate cultivates indigenous grape varieties like Manto Negro, Callet, and Gorgollasa, alongside international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The region’s Mediterranean climate, with its warm, dry days and cool nights, combined with mineral-rich soils and proximity to the sea, creates ideal conditions for growing high-quality grapes. Son Puig is committed to sustainable viticulture, employing organic farming methods and minimal intervention in the cellar to preserve the natural essence of its wines. This dedication results in wines that are expressive, bold, and deeply connected to the land.

WINE TOURS & TASTINGS

For those eager to explore Mallorca’s wine culture, a visit to Son Puig is a must. The estate offers guided tours where guests can stroll through the vineyards, learn about the winemaking process, and taste the wines in a breathtaking setting. Leading the experience is Isabel Alabern, daughter of the estate’s founder, who brings warmth and passion to each tour. She shares the story of how her father, Raimundo Alabern, transformed the estate into a thriving winery, explains the nuances of the local grape varieties, and showcases the vineyard’s commitment to sustainable winemaking. We were fortunate to visit Son Puig with the Ocho Suites team, where Isabel welcomed us for a private tour that began in the old chapel, continued through the vineyard rows, and ended with a beautiful lunch under the grapevine-covered pergola in the garden. It was a truly intimate and memorable experience—one that perfectly captures the charm and authenticity that all guests can expect when visiting Son Puig.

One of the most memorable aspects of the visit is the presence of Raimundo, the estate’s founder. Though no longer involved in daily operations, he often greets guests, proud of the legacy he has built. His passion for the land and its wines is evident, and his stories add a personal touch to the experience. At Son Puig, winemaking is more than a business—it is a family tradition built on love for the land, respect for nature, and a dedication to quality. Whether you’re a wine enthusiast or simply looking for an authentic Mallorcan experience, a visit to Son Puig offers an unforgettable journey into the island’s rich viticultural heritage.
