MIMBRERIA VIDAL - A CENTURY OF WICKER CRAFT IN PALMA
Nestled in the heart of Palma's historic centre, Mimbreria Vidal is a cherished establishment that has been preserving the art of wickerwork for over 100 years. Founded in 1925 by Lluís Palmer, the shop was acquired by Tomàs Vidal in 1955, marking the beginning of three generations dedicated to this traditional craft. Today, his grandson, also named Tomàs, continues the legacy, with his father Josep, at the age of 83, still lending a hand when needed.
TRADITIONAL CRAFTMANSHIP AT ITS BEST
Located on Carrer de la Corderia, the shop offers a wide array of handcrafted wicker and esparto products, including baskets, mats, hats, curtains, and even hammocks. One of their standout items is the senalla, a traditional Mallorcan basket made from the leaves of the palmito, a native dwarf palm. These baskets are still meticulously crafted on the island, keeping an age-old tradition alive.
REPAIRING TRADITION
Beyond selling handcrafted items, Mimbreria Vidal also offers repair services for traditional string chairs, a craft dating back to the mid-16th century. In fact, the name of their street, La Corderia, hints at the historical presence of such workshops in the area.
A LIVING PIECE OF PALMAS HISTORY
Stepping into Mimbreria Vidal is like taking a journey back in time. The shop's interior is a tapestry of wooden shelves filled with woven goods, many hanging from the ceiling, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. Recognized with the 'Emblematic' seal by Palma City Council, it stands as one of the few remaining businesses in Palma dedicated to the sale of handcrafted wicker products.
